A shirt, pants, and a Timex watch are all ordinary artifacts from a crime that is anything but.
Before investigators can even begin to search for a suspect, they need to identify the victim—something that's been a challenge in this case."You can see the brand name of the shoe on there is Trax," says Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse, looking at a picture of two dirty sneakers."This is part of our everyday work process," says Rouse. "We receive many unidentified cases each and every year.
The evidence includes a polyester size 2X Idle Time button-down shirt and a pair of blue jeans with a 46-inch waist."You can't always think that's a known given factor because people don't always wear the correct size clothing," explains Rouse. "Especially when they are sometimes a higher risk population."Receding water levels reveal the barrel that may have been dumped in the late 1970s or early 80s.
He says speculation that this was an organized crime hit has merit, from the timing of the murder to the manner of disposal."It's almost a carbon copy of what happened to a mobster named Johnny Roselli," says Schumacher. "Johnny Roselli, who had Las Vegas connections, ended up being murdered in Florida. He was put in a barrel and dumped in the bay outside of Miami. That barrel bobbed to the surface, and they found him in there. That happened in 1976.
There is a composite sketch of what the man may have looked like along with the details "not recognizable, near complete or complete skeleton."As for the DNA sample, it has also been entered into a national database, ready for comparison.
