A local man in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, died from hypothermia after being found frozen inside his home. The investigation revealed that utilities, including gas and water, had been shut off for approximately two years, leaving the man vulnerable to the extreme cold. While his family paid for electricity, space heaters were reportedly not in use. The case highlights the importance of checking on loved ones and the need for accessible assistance programs during cold weather.

Authorities in Cambria County are investigating the death of a local man whose body was found frozen inside his home in the Moxham section of Johnstown late last week. Investigators say his body was discovered on Friday, January 24th, after police responded to his Village Street residence for a welfare check. Authorities say Procious had reportedly been dead for approximately one week, and investigators had to wait for his body to thaw in order to conduct an autopsy.

Lees says the autopsy determined that Mr. Procious died from hypothermia and his death is being ruled an accident. Upon further investigation, police discovered that some of the utilities, like gas and water, had been shut off at Procious' home for approximately two years. Authorities note that last week's single-digit temperatures were a factor in his death, and that on the day his body was found, the inside temperature of his home was 18 degrees, with his body temperature being 22 degrees. Investigators say the man's family had been paying for his electricity bill, and space heaters were found inside, but they were reportedly not being used. Lees also noted that, according to the man's family, he had previously applied for assistance from social programs but reportedly never received any help. Officials also stressed the importance of checking in on family members, friends, and neighbors during this time of year, even when the outside temperatures appear mild or seasonably average. 6 News reached out to state utility officials about the situation and received the following statement. Our thoughts are with Mr. Procious' loved ones. While we cannot speak to the assistance the coroner alluded to or comment on specific applications due to individual privacy concerns, we believe every Pennsylvanian deserves the dignity and peace of mind of knowing they can heat their homes and keep themselves and their families warm and safe during the darkest and coldest months of the year, which is why DHS administers the federally-funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
