After running out of gas in California\u0027s Death Valley National Park, David Kelleher walked four kilometres in the searing heat.
The 67-year-old Kelleher, of Huntington Beach, was found dead by park visitors on June 14, less than 10 metres from Highway 190.
“On the morning of June 8, a park ranger noticed that there was only one vehicle in Zabriskie Point parking lot,” . “On the evening of June 11, the same park ranger saw only one vehicle in the parking lot and remembered it from three days earlier.”After an investigation, park rangers learned Kelleher was not reported missing. He was also cited for off-road driving on May 30.He had also said he was running low on gas when he spoke with park staff on May 30.
Park staff began a ground and air search in the Golden Canyon and Badlands Trails, but were limited due to the extreme heat.Try refreshing your browser, or“The National Park Service encourages park visitors to stay safe in the summer by not hiking at low elevations after 10 a.m., staying within a short walk of air conditioning, drinking plenty of water, and eating salty snacks,” the release said.John McCarry, of Long Beach, was found dead in Panamint Valley on June 1.
Another man, Peter Harootunian, has been missing since May 23 when his vehicle was found at Emigrant Campground.
