A man was found dead Friday afternoon following a fire in the first floor of an apartment building in Union County, authorities said.
Police were called about 4:50 p.m. to the 100 block of North Avenue in Garwood after multiple people reported that the first floor of the building was fully engulfed. Responding officers evacuated residents while the Garwood Fire Department fought the blaze, borough officials said. The Union County Mutual Aid dispatch center contacted other emergency responders to help contain the fire.An unidentified man was located in the first floor of the apartment, firefighters said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Garwood Police.
