“At that point, that male person was shot by police,” the southern region coordinator, Det Supt George Marchesini, told reporters on Saturday. Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup An investigation was ongoing and Marchesini would not confirm how many officers had fired their weapons or how many times the man had been shot.
“At this point in time, I’m not able to make any comment further, as it’s still under investigation,” he siad.“It was a last resort with no other option in terms of what unfolded,” Marchesini said.The incident is also subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.“They utilise the training that’s been provided,” he said.“Community safety is a priority, not just in terms of how police responded, but, obviously, in making … the community feel safe as well.
