Kody Johnston, a 25-year-old man from Alameda, was fatally shot in Oakland on December 30th while assisting a friend whose car had been stolen. Police are investigating whether the prior car theft is connected to the homicide. Johnston was remembered at his funeral as a loving and joyful person.
OAKLAND — Police here have identified a man who was shot and killed while assisting a loved one whose car had been stolen. Kody Johnston, 25, of Alameda, was shot and killed around 9 p.m. on December 30th at the 4300 block of Fleming Avenue. Police have not arrested a suspect; authorities say that the gunman walked up, ordered Johnston out of a parked car he was sitting in, then shot him when he refused.
Johnston was assisting a close friend whose car had been stolen earlier in the month, authorities said. Police are investigating whether the prior car theft is connected to the homicide. At Johnston’s funeral, held earlier this month, friends and family remembered him as “a lover of his family, both blood and chosen.” “Kody had a smile and a laugh that was infectious,” literature distributed at his memorial service says. “His hugs always made you realize just how much he loved you. It was hard not to be happy around him.”Anyone with information about the killing may call homicide investigators at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.
