man fatally shot his wife and critically wounded his stepdaughter earlier this week after the couple got into a “heated” argument over turning off “Monday Night Football,” the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said. “Three days before Christmas, this man shot and killed his wife, shot his stepdaughter, and then shot and killed himself. This is horrific, but destroying a family and the mental health of these children so close to Christmas is especially horrific,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in aJason Kenney, 47, had been drinking and watching his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, win against the Indianapolis Colts before the fatal shooting, Judd said at a press conference Tuesday.Facebook/Crystal Roure Towards the end of the game, his wife, 38-year-old Crystal Kenney, suggested the family watch something else, which sparked a heated argument between the two, Judd said. The fight escalated to the point where the wife told her 12-year-old son to call 911.The child ran to a neighbor’s house to ask her to make the call, and heard a gunshot on his way there, according to the press release. Crystal Kenney was found dead with a single gunshot wound to her head, and her 13-year-old daughter was found inside her bedroom critically injured, shot in her face and shoulder.Authorities said Jason Kenney intended to kill his stepdaughter, who was taken to a local hospital. Investigators later learned that one of the bullets entered the bridge of her nose and exited through the top of her head.Jason Kenney was able to flee the scene in his truck before deputies arrived and called his sister, who lives in upstate New York, according to Judd. The sheriff told reporters, “He says, ‘I’ve done something very, very bad. Very bad. I did something terrible and this is the last time you’ll ever talk to me. you’ll see me on the news, but I am not going to jail. I’m not going to jail for the rest of my life.’”Jason Kenney fled to his late father’s house, where Judd said a friend was staying, and went into a shed. Deputies surrounded the shed and told him to come out, but they heard a gunshot. Upon entering, Jason Kenney was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Judd said that upon further investigation, authorities found an undated note penned by Crystal Kenney to her husband. “You know, you’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again,” the note said. “This is not the way the family should be. You need God.”The sheriff noted “this is a family disturbance that apparently had gone on for some time” and that Crystal Kenney’s family members had told investigators “Oh, he’s been beatin’ on her for a while.” However, there were no records or reports of any disturbances at their residence, and Jason Kenney had never been arrested for domestic violence in the past, Judd said. The surviving children are currently staying with their grandparents. “I would tell my sister that I’m sorry that this happened to you. You didn’t deserve this. I promise I will love your babies so hard.”“What happened to him over time to make him turn this way is beyond me.
