The department said the smoke alarm in the suite was ringing, as was the building alarm, alerting occupants to evacuate. The fire was brought under control at 5:41 a.m. and residents were allowed to return to their suites around 6:30 a.m. Damage was estimated at $35,000. An investigation found the cause of the blaze was arson — a fire that was deliberately lit in the hallway of the suite where the man was trapped. Saskatoon Police Service is investigating, the department said.
