Simon Dean claimed it was merely a 'moment of madness' despite collecting the images over a decade

A pervert who had a sickening haul of more than 50,000 indecent images of children said he downloaded them in a "moment of madness".

Under interview with detectives, Dean admitted downloading and storing such materials but denied being involved in their distribution. A total of 13 computers, laptops, phones and hard drives were seized during the NCA's visit, with three found to contain indecent images and related searches also carried out on a further two.

Dean's sentencing started on September 5 this year but was adjourned so "further enquiries" could be made by the Probation Service as to his suitability to undergo the iHorizon sex offenders treatment programme. However, Rebecca Penfold, defending, told the court today, Monday, October 23 that he had been rejected from the programme because he was not deemed significant a risk.

Ms Penfold told the court her client had not shown any indication that there was no return to his offending behaviour since 2022. She said: "This is a man who is capable of being rehabilitated" and urged the court to suspend any sentence.
