A car crash in Hammond Monday evening that killed a Hammond man was not due to racing, according to police.
Police responded to the accident around 6:45 p.m. Sept. 5, where witnesses told them that a black vehicle was speeding and trying to pass another vehicle while heading northbound on Southeastern Avenue, Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said in a release. When it crossed the centerline, it hit a gray Jeep heading southbound, Kellogg said.
The driver of the black vehicle — identified by police as 47-year-old Geraldo Nazario — was pronounced dead at the scene, Kellogg said. The driver and front passenger of the Jeep escaped largely unscathed, but four children also in the vehicle are in stable condition after being transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, he said.Michelle L.
