A 29-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in a New Year's Eve fireworks explosion in Honolulu , bringing the total number of fatalities to one. The incident occurred when a lit bundle of mortar-style aerials tipped over and ignited crates of unlit fireworks, resulting in a rapid succession of explosions. Six people were flown to a hospital in Arizona for treatment earlier this month as Hawaii's only burn care facility reached capacity.

The deceased man was one of those flown to Arizona and had been hospitalized since Jan. 4. All victims were in their 20s or 30s and suffered burns covering 45% to 80% of their bodies. This tragedy has prompted Hawaii authorities to reassess their approach to enforcing fireworks laws. As a result, lawmakers are considering new measures, including the potential for $300 citations for illegal fireworks use and even class A felony charges and decades in prison for those whose fireworks spark serious injury or death. Existing laws have proven difficult to enforce due to the often-destroyed evidence and reluctance among residents to testify against their neighbors. Citations, however, would not require evidence collection, allowing a police officer to serve as a witness. Meanwhile, the Kauai Fire Department has urged residents to prioritize safety when using fireworks for Lunar New Year celebrations, recommending adult supervision of children and comprehensive education about the dangers of improper firework usage
