A child and the boat’s captain were among those rescued after a boat overturned in Redondo Beach Sunday.
The incident was reported around 1:08 p.m. about one mile offshore from the Avenue C Lifeguard Tower at Los Angeles County Beach, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators learned that a caller reported the overturned boat via cellphone to the Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol and said people were in the water and clinging to the boat, the sheriff’s department said. Harbor patrol and Baywatch Lifeguards arrived and rescued five people, including a child and the captain of the boat.
After a sixth person was reported missing, a rescue diver found him inside the overturned boat. Officials attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.
