Sheriff Bill Franklin said Yordy Centeno-Melchor, 31, tried to kidnap a teenage girl at Boy’s Store in Holtville on New Year’s Eve. He was taken into custody in Clanton Friday afternoon. Centeno-Melchor is charged with second-degree attempted kidnapping and had his initial court appearance on Monday, where the judge gave him a cash bail amount of $100,000.

According to the sheriff, Centeno-Melchor has been deported five times. He currently has a Wetumpka address. 19th Circuit District Attorney CJ Robinson explained that bail may be granted in this case because the charge of attempted kidnapping is not eligible for withholding bail under “Aniah’s Law.” He said a kidnapping charge would be, but not attempted kidnapping.New Alabama law in effect that gives state funds to eligible families with private, homeschool students
