Man dead after Houston police patrol car hits him in northeast Houston while responding to call

A man died early Thursday when a Houston police patrol car struck him while responding to a call in northeast Houston, officials said. An officer around was responding to a call around midnight without his flashing lights and sirens on and struck a man in the 5500 block of Aldine Bender Road, west of Interstate 69, Capt. Anthony McConnell, of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, told On Scene reporters.The officer got out of the vehicle and attempted to save the man, but was unsuccessful, McConnell said.

Investigators believe the man was in the middle lane of traffic, heading west when he was struck, McConnell said. Houston Police Department officials have placed the officer on administrative leave while the sheriff’s office and Harris County District Attorney’s Office conduct an investigation into what happened, according to Patricia Cantu, assistant police chief. The officer has been with the department about two years.An officer around 2 a.m. Dec. 30 was heading west on Interstate 10, near Lathrop Street, when he felt a hard bump that deployed his airbags, according to police.
