A one-minute police chase early Tuesday in south Houston ended with one person dead after a green Mercedes flipped and its driver was ejected, officials said.
A patrol officer just after 1 a.m. saw a speeding vehicle run through a red light near the intersection of Bellfort Avenue and Cullen Boulevard, Houston Assistant Police Chief Ben Tien told On Scene reporters. The officer then tried to get the driver of the vehicle to pull over.Instead, the driver of the Mercedes led the officer on a brief chase, rushing through multiple red lights before losing control of the vehicle near the intersection of Bellfort and Wayside Drive, Tien said.
The driver, who officials said was a man in his 30s, died at the scene.- He had not been identified by the Harris County medical examiner's office early Tuesday. Because the officer had tried to initiate a traffic stop, the crash was being considered an in-custody death. As such, it will be investigated, per department policy, Tien said. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard during an investigation.
