Ivan Gomez faces up to 24 years in prison when he is sentenced next month.

SALINAS – A 31-year-old man has been convicted of setting the 2020 Dolan Big Sur Fire that killed a dozen condors, seriously injured a firefighter and destroyed 10 homes, according to prosecutors.

On Aug. 18, 2020, California State Parks and Recreation officers spotted a fire cresting a ridgeline in the Los Padres National Forest. Around the same time, officers responded to reports of a man throwing rocks at vehicles on Highway 1 and Lime Creek Bridge. No evidence of any homicides was found, but a weeks-long investigation by the U.S. Forest Service confirmed the Dolan Fire started at the grow site, according to prosecutors.

Evidence also showed Gomez had time to start the fire around 5 p.m. and make his way to the area where he was confronted by California State Parks and Recreation officers, according to prosecutors.
