The jury heard testimony and saw evidence that Elan and one other co-conspirator created at least six fraudulent tax businesses and filed false tax returns in the names of thousands of victims. Some of that information was stolen from unsuspecting customers who’d simply visited the businesses to file their taxes.

That’s how they managed to get their hands on the tax returns of thousands of taxpayers who were clients.
