Daryeus Jones, 20, could remain in prison as long as 27 years for the 2022 slaying of Jamarian Coffey, according to Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich. Common Pleas Court Judge Susan Baker Ross sentenced Jones on Friday.
Jones pleaded guilty on July 29 to conspiracy to commit aggravated murder with a gun specification, aggravated robbery with a gun specification, felonious assault, improper handing of firearm in a motor vehicle with gun specification, and carrying a concealed weapon. Police say the shooting happened around 5p.m. on Oct. 22, 2022. Coffey, Jones, Domonic Herring and another 18-year-old male met on Jefferson Avenue near West Exchange Street in Akron, prosecutors say. The four walked together for several blocks to Dodge Avenue near West Exchange Street when Jones and Herring confronted the teens. Jones then shot Coffey several times, killing him.
