The man convicted in the killing of 15-year-old Kiplyn Davis will be released from prison next month after serving 15 years for manslaughter, leaving her parents still without answers about where their daughter’s remains are more than three decades after she disappeared.
Timothy Brent Olsen is scheduled to be released on Feb. 10 after completing his sentence for the death of the Spanish Fork High School student, who vanished during a lunch break in May 1995. Olsen served two prison sentences related to the Kiplyn Davis case. In November 2006, he was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for perjury. Four other men were also convicted of perjury and served shorter sentences.Man to remain in prison, refuses to give location of Utah girl's bodyIn 2011, Olsen pleaded guilty to manslaughter in state court. The plea did not require him to reveal the location of Davis’ body. Her parents have said many times over the years that they would support his release if he led them to their daughter’s remains. Olsen and the others involved in the case have maintained their silence. “We forgive him. We’ve got to do that. I just wish he’d come forward,” said Davis’ father, Richard Davis. They try to focus on living their lives and helping others in the community rather than worrying about Olsen’s release. “There’s a higher court he will have to face one day. I hope he understands that,” Richard Davis said. Years ago, Kiplyn’s parents placed a monument at a cemetery, hoping one day to find her remains and give her a dignified burial. The last time Richard Davis pleaded with Olsen to reveal the location of his daughter’s remains was in 2021. During that hearing, Utah Board of Pardons and Parole Chair Carrie Cochran reminded Olsen that Kiplyn’s family had spent years searching for peace and asked whether he had considered their suffering.“Unfortunately, it took prison to change me into a person I’m OK looking in the mirror at,” Olsen said during the hearing. But when Richard Davis asked him to help end his family’s decades-long nightmare by disclosing where Kiplyn’s remains could be found, Olsen said he had nothing more to say. “I’ve done everything I can. I take responsibility. That’s why I pleaded guilty. There’s nothing else I can do,” he said.“Being a man is having integrity and honesty. You have to be honest with yourself and other people," Richard Davis said. The Davises believe Olsen and four others took Kiplyn into Spanish Fork Canyon and attempted to rape her, but she fought them. They believe one of them struck her in the head with a rock and left her for dead before returning later to bury her body. Kiplyn knew Olsen and the others through school. They all lived in Spanish Fork. Her parents believe she may have gone with one of them to buy a snack during lunch, planning to return to class. She left all her belongings in her school locker. Olsen and the others had months to coordinate their silence as police initially treated Kiplyn’s disappearance as a runaway case, delaying the investigation. During the federal case, Olsen told investigators he saw a man arguing with Kiplyn and said the man struck her in the head with a rock. He later retracted that statement, saying he had provided false information. In the state case, Olsen said a man asked for his help moving Kiplyn’s body, but never identified who that man was. In 2021, the Utah Legislature passed a law requiring offenders convicted of homicide to cooperate in good faith in locating a victim’s remains to be eligible for parole. The Davises have kept their porch light on every night since their daughter vanished. “The porch light is on and it will stay on until she comes home — or we go home to her,” Richard Davis said. They live in the same Spanish Fork house where they raised Kiplyn and her three siblings and say they have no plans to leave.
