Bunny Shaw became Manchester City's all-time top goalscorer at the weekend and the striker is on course to become one of the club's best-ever signings
The Jamaica international's second-half strike against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon was her 68th goal in sky blue - a tally that saw her surpass Georgia Stanway to become the club's all-time top scorer. For that milestone to arrive in a derby, in front of more than 40,000 fans at the Etihad, felt fitting; an extraordinary moment for an extraordinary player.
And, if the 27-year-old, who arrived in Manchester on a free transfer from French Division 1 side Bordeaux in July 2021, manages to inspire the club to a first title in eight years this term, she will surely go down as one of the Blues' best-ever signings. Her potency in front of goal has inevitably led to comparisons with another prolific City centre-forward. After both she and Erling Haaland were honoured at the PFA Awards last August, the club's official Facebook account shared a photo of the duo side by side; a joyous snapshot of two players at the very peak of their goalscoring powers.
While it is a ringing endorsement of Shaw's considerable talents that she is so frequently compared with one of the most gifted strikers on the planet, perhaps the biggest ode to her abilities arrived at last summer's Women's World Cup. After Shaw and her Jamaica team held Brazil to a goalless draw in Melbourne - therefore condemning the South Americans to a shock group-stage exit - the TV cameras captured a touching moment between the City forward and legendary striker, Marta.
While that ability to overcome adversity is a hallmark of the current Jamaica team, it is also a trait that has characterised Shaw's life so far. Whether it be personal tragedy - the Spanish Town native lost three brothers to gang-related violence and another in a car accident - or battling with some of the best defenders in the world on the pitch, the striker's tenacity and grit renders her an almost peerless talent.
