Manchester City took on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in a huge Premier League encounter, with more Pep Guardiola surprises.
Manchester City fans are used to spending the hour before kick-off guessing what formation Pep Guardiola has picked. Even when the system looked more straightforward than usual, the manager showed at Arsenal he is still prepared to play roulette with his team selections.
It's not just Bernardo who can play multiple positions, however, as the system at the Emirates showed. Lewis has played as an inverted full-back, number eight and now number ten in his last three starts. Alvarez has excelled so far this season in the second striker role behind Haaland, and now he was doing the 'Bernardo' role from the right. On the left, Phil Foden was combining coming inside and staying wide, depending on the situation.
It's a cliche of Guardiola's to say 'I decide for this game', when asked to explain his team selection. It's not always obvious what he has decided when picking one midfielder or winger over another, but it's becoming more obvious this season with each player and each system picked for a specific purpose.
