The court was told of alleged sustained harassment of the victim by the accused over several months

A Co Tyrone man appeared in court on Friday after being charged with stalking offences under new legislation.

The court heard of an alleged sustained harassment of the victim, who is in her 30s, by McFarland over several months, with messages being sent by him from various social media accounts and an unannounced visit to her home. A police constable said McFarland had an ‘infatuation’ with the victim and sent messages of a ‘pestering nature’ via social media accounts. The messages included ‘keep safe in my arms’ and ‘hello honey please contact me’.

An investigating officer said McFarland had sent the victim 14 messages without reply through a Facebook account recognised by the victim on 5 June and was arrested on 24 June. He appeared in court a day later charged with breaching the restraining order and was granted bail.
