Investigators allege Haynes encountered Ruth Dalton, 80, as she was driving in the Madison Valley neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Haynes was arrested on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, in connection to the murder of 80-year-old Ruth Dalton in Seattle ’s Madison Valley neighborhood. was charged with murder in the first degree with a deadly weapon enhancement , assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon enhancement , and animal cruelty in the first degree with a deadly weapon enhancement .

According to the Seattle Police Department, Haynes pushed Dalton out of her car and then ran her over in his attempt to flee. Dalton fell to the ground on Martin Luther King Jr. Way near East Harrison Street and bystanders rushed to her aid.The bystanders and first responders attempted CPR, but Dalton passed away at the scene. One bystander grabbed a baseball bat and struck the vehicle multiple times as Haynes was fleeing the scene.

The Seattle police forensics team located Dalton’s cell phone and took fingerprints, which resulted in a match to Haynes’ prints that were in the database due to prior felony convictions. He had additional felony convictions in the 90s and was sent to prison in 1999 after being convicted of robbery. Haynes stabbed a corrections officer while in prison in 2003 and stayed in custody until 2017, according to court documents.
