A Merrillville man is charged after setting a Christmas wreath on fire.
Joshua Henry, 27, was charged Tuesday with three felony counts of arson and one misdemeanor. He is in custody and held on a $4,000 cash bond. Henry is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon. Henry’s mother told police he refused to take medication for mental illness and he stayed with them, because there was nowhere else for him to go. Merrillville Police were called around 3:45 p.m. Nov. 6 to an apartment building on the 1900 block of W. 75th Place.
As they were talking, Henry appeared to walk out of the apartment. The police officer told him to sit back down on a sofa inside and spoke to his parents. His mother said she was asleep and didn’t know what happened. Apartment staff estimated there was $3,000 worth of damage. They told police that at least 21 people lived in the building. Luckily, the fire didn’t spread. Henry claimed he was in bed, then said lighting the fire “may have been a bad idea,” according to the affidavit.
