A man has been charged in a shooting death that resulted in a nine hour police...

Jesus Mendez, 33, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a weapon, Houston police officials said. Mendez has a previous felony conviction of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance from October 2020, court documents show.

Authorities responded to a shooting in the 4200 block of Knotty Oaks Trail around 1 p.m. Tuesday and found a man dead in a backyard with gunshot wounds, and believed Mendez, who was in a nearby house, to be involved and armed. A standoff ensued as police negotiators and SWAT officers attempted to get him out of the house, police officials said. When officers obtained a search warrant they entered the home and took Mendez into custody around 10 p.m.

There were others in the house with Mendez, and earlier in the night a 13-year-old boy believed to be a relative, came out on his own. The shooting will be referred to a Harris County grand jury for review and Mendez is held on bond of $35,000, according to court records.
