Man charged in connection with February fatal shooting in south Houston

A man has been accused in the February shooting death of a man in south Houston, officials said.

Michael Coates, 20, has been charged on suspicion of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Marcus Mercado, 29, according to Harris County court records. Coates is accused of shooting Mercado after the two got into an argument in the parking lot of a convenience store in the 9800 block of Meadowglen Lane, according to the Houston Police Department.Officers responded to the shooting around 12:25 p.m. Feb. 11 and found Mercado lying in the parking lot, officials said.

Prosecutors charged Coates Friday in connection with Mercado’s death, according to court records. Coates already had been facing one count of aggravated robbery of someone older than 65 in connection with a separate case. In that case, two people in west Houston told investigators someone had pointed a gun at them and stolen a vehicle from their home’s garage in the 10000 block of Briar Forest Drive, according to court filings.
