'They were in the toilets talking about it thinking it's funny'
A man who took a kitchen knife to a Lancaster nightclub was caught after a woman overheard him telling his mates about it in the toilets.
The group went to the Generation nightclub in Brook Street and when they went to the toilets Base, 23, confided in his mates that he had brought out a kitchen knife "as some form of protection". Unbeknown to him a woman overheard the conversation and informed the bouncers.At Preston Magistrates' Court on Friday Base, of Westminster Road in Morecambe, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article in a public place.
Base's solicitor, John Halewood-Dodd, said that in the past his client has been a victim of bullying and assault in a domestic setting. Since the offence has has obtained a job as an assistant bar manager at a venue in Arnside and the court heard his new employers are aware of the court proceedings against him.
"The day he was out was a friend's birthday. He had no intention of going out given that he had been traumatised himself when he was a victim the previous day. Foolishly, having been rung by a friend saying 'you've got to be out' he only felt reassured by having some form of protection. He initially wasn't going out but peer pressure played a part with them saying 'you've got to go out, it's your best mate's birthday'.
