DRAPER — A 53-year-old man was arrested over the weekend and accused of shooting at another vehicle — and possibly two vehicles — during a suspected road rage confrontation in Draper, resulting in minor injuries to a woman.

John Edward Orvis was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of illegal discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault and being a restricted person in possession of a gun. The shooting allegation comes with a road rage penalty enhancement. The incident began on I-15 about 11:40 p.m. Saturday. A man in a black truck pulled alongside another vehicle and stared at the occupants. The driver of the truck, Orvis, then began following the victims, according to Draper police."They attempted to avoid this driver by accelerating and ultimately passing their intended exit. The suspect followed them and they believe he attempted to intentionally hit their vehicle," police said. The victims drove into a grocery store parking lot near 200 East and 12300 South, where Orvis followed and "brandished a handgun," a police booking affidavit states."The suspect pulled up next to them, began to yell at them. They attempted to get away from the suspect and called 911. While attempting to flee from the suspect, they heard what they believed was a gunshot," according to Draper police.A driver in a third vehicle was cut off by Orvis and the victim vehicle near 12300 South and 300 East. That driver saw the vehicles "driving erratically through the area," the affidavit states, and "believed they were involved in a road rage incident."Orvis then stopped his truck near the intersection, got out and "pulled out a gun and shot vehicle one time," police said.A woman inside the car originally thought she had been shot. Officers located the victims and learned one woman "had minor injuries caused by the shooting and their vehicle had an obvious bullet hole."After firing the shot, Orvis got back into his truck and resumed chasing the first vehicle, "at which time the initial victims reported hearing more gunshots and believed he was shooting at them near the area of 13200 South 300 East," the affidavit says.Draper police located Orvis on Minuteman Drive and took him into custody."The subject stated voices coming from the music he was listening to in his truck led him to Draper and he was driving around the city when he ran out of gas," according to the
