A man accused of attempting to steal an airplane from the Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport in October has been arrested. 29-year-old Augustin Ortiz was arrested on January 12 by deputies from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of taking an aircraft without consent, trespassing, and trespassing in an airport's posted area. He was later released on his own recognizance. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on October 13th.
A mechanic was working on a plane with the engine running when Ortiz allegedly opened the aircraft's door. The mechanic defended himself by kicking Ortiz away and ordering him to leave. However, Ortiz allegedly ran towards a hangar containing private airplanes. He entered one of the planes, turned on the ignition and several lights. The mechanic shouted at him to exit, and Ortiz complied, fleeing towards a wooded area. Deputies launched a search for Ortiz using a drone, a police dog, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter, but were unsuccessful in locating him. Authorities believe Ortiz entered the airport through a gap in the fencing caused by an ongoing construction project. Community tips played a crucial role in identifying Ortiz, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant
