WAYNE COUNTY , Ohio - The 33-year-old man accused of stabbing Wayne County Sheriff Thomas Ballinger and Wayne County Sergeant Dan Broome is expected to appear in Wayne County Municipal Court Wednesday morning.
Chad Palmer, of Orrville, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a massive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement departments. The stabbings happened around 11 a.m. when Sheriff Ballinger and Sergeant Broome responded to a suspicious person call in the 9000 block of Congress Rd. in West Salem. Both the sheriff and sergeant were transported to Wooster Community Hospital, with Sergeant Broome being life flighted to Akron City Hospital, before they were released later in the day.
The search for Palmer lasted until 12:57 p.m., when he was found in a structure against the woods in the same area. While in the shed, authorities confirmed Palmer found gasoline and doused himself with it, and went live on Facebook. A witness who responded to the area told 19 News he is close friends with Palmer who had his “life taken over by drugs.
”19 News found through Wayne County court records that Palmer was arrested in March for disorderly conduct, inducing panic, and resisting arrest. Palmer has been on parole since 2024 after serving seven years for felonious assault among charges, according to records from Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Correction.
