A male employee was hospitalized after being stabbed multiple times at Valley Fair Mall on Monday afternoon, and the suspect was taken into custody, police said.
A man accused of stabbing another man at Valley Fair Mall because of his religion had been granted parole more than once despite a lengthy criminal history, prompting questions about Utah's parole process. A review of both court and Board of Pardons and Parole records shows Larsen had previous criminal cases that included dismissed charges, plea agreements, and multiple parole decisions.

Board of Pardons and Parole records show the board first granted Larsen parole in January 2024.
After he was released, records show he violated his parole, was returned to prison, his parole was revoked in October 2024, but he was granted parole again, effective January 2025. Nathan Evershed, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, said the case raises understandable questions about the parole process.
"I think everyone has a right to ask, well, 'Shouldn't it have been longer? ' Obviously, he was a risk; he had a pattern, but there's also some other things that we just don't know right now. " 2News contacted the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole for an interview about Larsen's case. The board was unavailable for an interview but provided written responses to questions.
"The Board looks at many factors when making its decision with public safety being the priority. Other considerations include victim impact, statutory requirements, criminal history, risk reduction and more.
" 2News also asked whether the board could comment specifically on Larsen's case or explain its decision to grant him parole. The board provided documentation from Larsen's parole violation hearing. The records state the board revoked Larsen's parole in October 2024, returning him to prison. During that same hearing, the board granted him parole again, effective January 2025.
Just this week, West Valley police said Larsen stabbed a man multiple times inside Valley Fair Mall because of the victim's faith. Looking back on the decision to grant parole, Evershed said, "In hindsight, which is all we have, that was that decision was probably improper, because he wasn't able to actually modify himself. He went after a random stranger.
" Evershed said that based on Larsen's criminal history and the evidence in the current case, he expects prosecutors to pursue the case aggressively. "And now everybody has a really good understanding as to what his mindset is currently, and everyone has a really good understanding as to the risk that he now has," he continued.
