Zachary T. Latham claims he acted in self-defense when he stabbed his neighbor to death following a long-running feud.

William T. Durham Sr., a correctional officer at South Woods State Prison, was stabbed to death in a fight with a neighbor. The attorney for a man charged in the stabbing death of his neighbor in Vineland in 2020 plans to seek a change of venue for the trial.on charges of second-degree reckless manslaughter, aggravated assault and weapons offenses in the May 4, 2020, brawl that ended in the stabbing death of William T. Durham Sr.

“I want to sit down with Mr. Latham. I want to spend time with him. I want to go there to Hudson,” he said. The state previously made a plea offer that would allow Latham to “plead open” to the reckless manslaughter charge, meaning a judge would determine the sentence rather than the prosecution making a sentencing recommendation.Superior Court Judge Cristen D’Arrigo expressed frustration with the lack of progress on the change of venue motion and told Perry he would allow one final pre-trial conference on Sept. 7 before scheduling the case for trial.

Before last week’s hearing concluded, Latham asked the judge why he could not share his video of the fatal encounter. As Latham fought with the Durhams, his wife recorded video of the brawl on her cellphone. The defense previously submitted two videos of the incident as evidence in the case. “Sir, the public is not running this proceeding,” D’Arrigo responded. “This is not a proceeding of public opinion. This is a legal court. This matter will be resolved on legal grounds, not on opinion grounds.”“Correct, sir,” D’Arrigo answered. “The jury’s determination is a legal decision, not an opinion decision. Do you understand? It is the result of deliberations of 12 individuals.”shows Durham Sr.

Durham Sr. was stabbed in the back and another wound to his left underarm punctured a lung, according to prosecutors. He died later at a hospital. Latham suffered a concussion in the incident.
