De’Lawnte Hardy is also accused in the fatal shooting of his grandmother
CLEVELAND, Ohio – A man accused of fatally shooting his grandmother and a Cleveland police officer six days apart has been indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on aggravated murder charges., 27, as police sought to arrest Hardy on a warrant in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood Thursday. After a standoff at a home on East 80th Place, Hardy tried to flee on a bicycle and fired four shots at officers as they tried to arrest him, striking Ritter once, authorities said.
The warrant stemmed from a June 28 incident in Garfield Heights, where Hardy stole the gun of his 63-year-old grandmother, Beatrice Porter, and shot her in the head, authorities say. Porter was hospitalized and put on life support before she died Thursday, authorities said. The 18-count indictment handed up on Wednesday includes charges of attempted aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and aggravated robbery.
“In the course of a week, De’Lawnte Hardy caused unimaginable damage and grief to two families, our law enforcement community and our entire region,” Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said in a statement. “My office will walk step by step with these two families to ensure justice is served. My thoughts and prayers remain with those grieving from this tragic situation.”
After officers arrived at the home on East 80th Place early Thursday, Ritter called to Hardy six times for him to walk out of the front door with his hands up, O’Malley said. The prosecutor said Hardy fled from the house with two swords and the gun he stole from his grandmother. He tried to pedal away on his grandfather’s bike when officers tried to arrest him. During the struggle, he fired the shots, O’Malley said. The first shot struck Ritter, while another narrowly missed an officer, the prosecutor said.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
