All four people survived the crash down a 250-foot cliff in northern California.

Dharmesh Patel, 42, of Pasadena, Calif., will be booked into San Mateo County Jail after he’s released from a hospital, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement on Tuesday. It wasn’t immediately known if Patel has an attorney.

Patel is a doctor in radiology at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in the Mission Hills area of Los Angeles. A statement from the hospital indicates the three passengers in the car were members of his family., investigators with the highway patrol said the evidence indicated the crash was “an intentional act.”

Patel, a 41-year-old woman, a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were in the four-door Tesla on Highway 1 when it went over the side of the cliff, flipping several times before landing on its wheels at the bottom near the Pacific Ocean. The crash occurred along an area known as Devil’s Slide, a steep, rocky and winding coastal section about 15 miles south of San Francisco. Reports say crashes there rarely end with survivors.

Helicopters were used to rescue Patel and the woman, while the children were pulled up the side of the cliff in a rescue basket. The rescue took several hours amid constant rain, heavy winds, slick roads and crashing waves. investigators do not know what driving mode the Tesla was in when the crash occurred but don’t believe it was a factor. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
