Man accused of fatally shooting 9-year-old girl, injuring her mother in Heights area has been arrested, HPD says
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 404 Oxford Street around 9:54 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, police said they learned there was a domestic disturbance between a man and woman.
Police said the child, who was identified by her mother Brittany Sorrells as Khylie Sorrells, was shot in the head. Brittany was shot in the shoulder, according to HPD. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where police said Khylie was pronounced dead. A 1-year-old and 7-year-old were also at the residence during the time of the shooting, police said. Investigators said those children, who are of no relation to the suspect, were not harmed and have been placed with family members.
Lt. Horelica said the suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Jeremiah Jones. Sorrells reportedly had not seen Jones in a few weeks and was warned by neighbors that he was there. Horelica said a fight ensued and the children were separated from their mother.Jones then went into the room where the 9-year-old was and intentionally “executed” the child, Horelica said.Police said Jones fled the scene in a dark-colored Camaro with the license plate number RTY0500.
Horelica said Jones was out on bond for violating a protective order the woman filed against him. He has an extensive criminal background stemming back to when he was 12 years old, including theft and reckless driving.
