Ming Wiseman is accused of punching and kicking Lim, but he said on Thursday he would never lay a hand on another person unless it was in self-defence.

A man accused of punching and kicking Sydney activist Danny Lim at a train station says he will be defending the charges, telling journalists he is not a violent person and it’s possible that Lim injured himself.

On Thursday, when the matter was mentioned for the first time at Burwood Local Court, Wiseman approached the court singingfrom The Sound of Music and handed out his business card. He reminded journalists of his surname by singing “wise men say only fools rush in”, a line from Elvis’Wiseman said he would never lay a hand on another person unless it was in self-defence, and suggested Lim’s injuries could have been self-inflicted.

The word has become something of a trademark for Lim, who was fined and charged for using it on two signs but successfully challenged the cases in court. One of the signs, in 2019, read “SMILE CVN’T! WHY CVN’T?” while a 2015 placard addressed former prime minister Tony Abbott with the phrase: “PEOPLE CAN CHANGE TONY YOU CVN’T”.

In a lengthy interview outside the court, Wiseman said he was blacklisted in China, claimed One Nation politician Pauline Hanson only whinges and has no solutions, and called for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to get a pay rise.
