Jason Oakes allegedly told someone he aimed for windows during a drive-by shooting that killed one person in far northeast Dallas, shockingly realizing he had fatally shot someone.
A man accused in a drive-by shooting that killed one person in far northeast Dallas last month told someone he had aimed for the nearby house’s windows to “scare” people but was shocked to learn he had fatally shot someone, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit. Dallas police were called to a shooting about 3:10 a.m. on December 29 in the 11800 block of Woodbridge Drive, near Forest Lane. Two people were injured in the shooting, including 27-year-old Jason Oakes.
Oakes remained in Dallas County custody Friday and is facing a murder charge, according to jail records. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney. After the shooting, police received two tips identifying Oakes, who goes by the name “Bama” and “Alabama,” as the alleged gunman, an officer wrote in the affidavit. A man injured in the shooting told police that Oakes called him on his phone after the episode. When the man informed Oakes that Kesterson had died, Oakes began crying and said he “just wanted to knock out a couple windows and scare them all,” according to the affidavit. The vehicle allegedly used by Oakes — a grey Toyota Camry also seen in surveillance footage captured in the neighborhood — was reported stolen about an hour and a half before the shooting, the affidavit says. The caller who reported the Camry stolen said Oakes had taken it. When the vehicle was returned, police searched it to find a 9mm shell case matching casings found at the location of the shooting, the affidavit says. More than a week before Kesterson died, Oakes allegedly threatened the owner of the house where the shooting took place, saying he would “kick in the door” and “shoot up his house,” the affidavit says. Oakes also faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle, jail records show
