Imaging Associates in Anchorage, Alaska, host monthly mammogram parties to promote breast cancer screenings and create a comfortable and supportive environment for women.
Eight women gathered at Imaging Associates in Anchorage, Alaska , for a unique social event: a mammogram party. The atmosphere was relaxed, with pizza, salad, and wine being enjoyed as the group chatted. This wasn't your typical book club, though. The purpose of the gathering was to encourage regular breast cancer screenings. Each woman took turns going upstairs for a mammogram, an x-ray of breast tissue that can detect early signs of cancer.
Nurse Budde, the breast care coordinator, was on hand to answer any questions the women might have about breast density or screening procedures. Doreen Joyner, the organizer behind the party, invited ten friends and colleagues to join her. Joyner, deeply impacted by the loss of her mother and brother to cancer, sees these gatherings as a vital way to promote early detection and support her friends. She actively encourages women who haven't yet had a mammogram to participate. Joyner shared a heartwarming story of one woman she persuaded to get screened, who subsequently received an early diagnosis and survived breast cancer. Alaska, unfortunately, has one of the lowest mammogram screening rates in the country. Only 60% of women over 40 in Alaska are up-to-date with their screenings, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Budde, who recently underwent breast cancer treatment herself, emphasizes the importance of regular screenings and the value of these parties in making the process less daunting. She believes the social atmosphere and support system can significantly reduce the stigma and fear often associated with mammograms. Joyner, a testament to the event's effectiveness, shared her own experience, noting that her breast implants didn't make the mammogram as uncomfortable as she'd expected. She was relieved to receive a normal result and looks forward to the next mammogram party with her friend
