A Mesquite officer shot a person who was suspected of fleeing the scene of gunfire and of a crash near I-30, police said.

officer shot a person multiple times early Monday after police responded to sounds of gunfire and witnessed a vehicle crash, officials said.

Shortly before 3 a.m., officers near Interstate 30 and Sorrento Boulevard heard gunfire from near the interstate, according to a news release from the police department.A few seconds later, a different officer saw the suspect vehicle exit onto Gus Thomasson Road at a high rate of speed, and as the driver attempted to take the turnaround to continue west onto I-30, he lost control and crashed, police said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. Police did not report any other injuries. Two other suspects were found and arrested, but the fourth person remained at large as of 9:45 a.m. Monday, police said.A firearm was recovered from where the officer shot the suspect and multiple additional guns were found inside the suspect vehicle, according to the release.Mesquite police’s criminal investigation is ongoing, and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit is also investigating the shooting.

Officers are typically placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation after being involved in a shooting.
