The family alleges that the department and various federal agencies had a hand in the civil rights leader's 1965 assassination.
Malcolm X’s family has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the NYPD, CIA, FBI and other agencies, claiming that the government played a role in the civil rights leader’s 1965 assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in Washington Heights.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, argued that the NYPD and the federal agencies were aware of threats against Malcolm X but failed to intervene, and “intentionally removed” officers from inside the ballroom where the killing took place before engaging “in a decadeslong effort to cover up their malfeasance.” Since then, the complaint noted, members of Malcolm X’s family “have lived their lives without a father and grandfather, along with a cloud of suspicion surrounding his death.
Questions still hover over Malcolm X’s assassination nearly six decades later. In 2022, two of the three men convicted of the killingfrom New York City and revelations that the FBI, NYPD and prosecutors had withheld crucial evidence that could have acquitted both men. Then-District Attorney Cy Vance apologized at the time for “serious, unacceptable violations of law and the public trust.” The third man was granted parole in 2010.
