Malaysia to step up monitoring, enforcement of e-waste imports
Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad says some containers intercepted were falsely marked as something else other than e-waste to get around restrictions. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, December 15, 2022.
The department issued 18 notifications under section 31 and section 37 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to order the containers to be returned to the country of origin for carrying items containing e-waste without obtaining prior approval. Nik Nazmi said based on Customs information, three other containers that were inspected at West Port, Klang, on December 8 were also found to contain waste materials imported from the United States and Spain.
