Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim listed a number of reasons Malaysia has become a popular manufacturing hub for chips.

Multinational companies have increasingly looked to increase their presence in the Southeast Asian nation as they diversify operations under the specter of U.S.-China tensions. German chipmaker Infineon has begun the first phase of a new fab in Kulim which the company says will become the world's largest silicon carbide factory.

"This has helped generate more interest from the investors," Anwar said, adding that Infineon's participation has demonstrated "in a big way" the company's confidence in the country's overall semiconductor ecosystem.announced plans to invest over $7 billion to build a chip packaging and testing factory in Malaysia. The company's first overseas production facility began in 1972 with a $1.6 million investment in an assembly site.

"Our role in the government is to facilitate the process, to make sure that we disburse adequate funds for that purpose," Anwar said.. The country has ambitions to train and upskill 60,000 Malaysians to become highly skilled semiconductor engineers over the next decade.
