The Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is reviewing the target for the Malaysia Year of Visit 2026 (TMM2026) after exceeding initial expectations and attracting 38 million tourists in 2024. The ministry aims to generate at least RM150 billion in tourism revenue and increase the per capita expenditure of foreign tourists.
The Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) is reviewing the target for the Malaysia Year of Visit 2026 ( TMM2026 ) following the country's tourism sector exceeding initial expectations. Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing stated that the original target of 36 million international tourists might be increased after Malaysia successfully attracted 38 million tourists in 2024, surpassing projections.
'We have already reached 38 million tourists last year, so we need to re-evaluate the TMM2026 target. If we stick to the 36 million figure, we are actually setting a lower target than our current achievements. We will revise this target to make it more realistic and potentially have a greater economic impact on the country from the tourism sector,' he said.Furthermore, the ministry has set a target to generate at least RM150 billion in tourism revenue, focusing on increasing the per capita expenditure of foreign tourists. The minister explained that the ministry will also introduce large-scale campaigns focusing on high-quality tourism products, including the luxury tourism segment. 'Currently, we are at RM3,000 per capita, but we are working on how to increase this value. When tourists spend more, the local economy will benefit greatly. We will look at the latest data to determine a new target that is more relevant to the current global tourism trends. We also need to ensure there are exclusive products that can attract them. All sectors, including the hotel industry, upscale restaurants, and organizers of premium activities, must collaborate to offer the best experiences to both high-end and mid-range tourists,' he stated. Apart from major tourist destinations, the ministry will also intensify promotions for homestay and rural tourism through various campaigns and activities. 'We want tourists to experience the uniqueness of Malaysia's multiculturalism. For example, in Sarawak, we can offer the experience of staying in longhouses, enjoying local food, and participating in community activities. We want to ensure that tourists not only come but also spend money, thereby contributing to the development of the local economy,' he shared. According to him, these promotions will be carried out through digital platforms and influencers from within and outside the country to ensure wider and more effective dissemination of messages regarding the country's tourism industry. 'All social media platforms will be used, including collaborations with local and international celebrities and influencers. New approaches like this should be utilized optimally so that our promotions are more extensive. We will also showcase more engaging video content to highlight the unique culture and local destinations to the world,' he said. In addition, he reminded everyone not to exaggerate the issue of the viral TMM2026 promotional video, while assuring that the full version will be launched soon. 'The 41-second video that went viral was not the full promotional video. For the new video, the ministry will ensure that all essential elements, including mosques and other places of worship, are included in the next version. Do not make this issue a source of polemics that could damage the country's reputation as a tourism destination,' he urged
