The protestors said they were against 'talking heads who have underlying agendas telling you what’s what and sabotaging scientific research for their own individual gains.”
Frigid temperatures didn’t stop a group of around 20 people from standing outside the Pennsylvania state capitol to protest“It’s so important to speak out against what RFK Jr. is doing and acknowledge how he’s hurting patients,” said Dr.
Mark Lopatin, a retired rheumatologist. Lopatin spoke to PennLive in front of a gathering group of protestors holding signs with sayings like “RFK Jr.- Risk to Public Health,” “Data Matters” and “RFK Jr.- Making America Sick Again” and chanting “Ho ho, hey hey, fire that worm-brain RFK.”“When you have a health problem, you want to go to your physician,” Lopatin said. “Your physician’s the one who studied this. Your physician is the one who knows you rather than talking heads who have underlying agendas telling you what’s what and sabotaging scientific research for their own individual gains.” Board-certified pathologist Dr. Andrea Fellerman-Kesack said she spent her career developing vaccines and working on safety of cancer drugs. “I put my life and soul into developing new and safe medicines, and to watch RFK destroy what is basically my life’s work is soul-destroying,” she said. Fellerman-Kesack said she believes scientists should do a better job of simplifying the way they speak so the public can understand what they’re doing. “Physicians aren’t God,” she said. “We aren’t always 100% right. Science is our best guess, and people put decades of work behind the advice that they’re giving you.” Speakers at the protest included state Rep. Tarik Khan, a Philadelphia Democrat and a former nurse practitioner. Khan was passionate, ditching the podium in favor of an animated speech to the crowd. “This is our 250th anniversary. Let’s not forget what this country was founded on: It was founded on hope. It was founded on innovation. It was founded on science. Let’s not deny that. Let’s not move backward, let’s move forward,” Khan said. Stephen Catanese, president of Pennsylvania’s social service employees union SEIU Local 668, was the only non-medical practitioner who spoke to the crowd. “We have a voice. And it is okay to use that voice to say no. So I’m out here with y’all to say no. Hell no. Get the hell out of my state, and the sooner we can get him out of office, the better,” Catanese said.DaniRae Renno is a general assignment reporter for PennLive, covering local and breaking news.
