Little Mermaid make up artist Peter King has been forced to defend his work on actress Melissa McCarthy.
The Little Mermaid 's live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic has once again faced criticism, this time for its makeup choices.
For those unaware, Ursula's character drew heavy inspiration from the legendary drag queen Divine , as confirmed by the film's composer, Alan Menken. In fact, her distinct thick eyeshadow and thin eyebrows closely resemble those of the late performer. He said: "Why can't I do as good a job as a queer makeup artist? That's trying to claim it and that's fine, if that's what they wanna do, but don't put people down because they're not what they want it to be."
Melissa, however, has spoken about drawing from drag for her performance of Ursula according to Page Six , saying she “100 percent” researched drag queens while preparing for the role in the new film, which came out on May 26.
