The Make-A-Wish Foundation and partners like the Houston Museum of Natural Science and Shell made the special evening possible. The foundation’s Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter expects to surpass 10,000 wishes granted to children facing critical illness over more than 30 years. Asked about a wish, Emanuel said he wanted to buy a telescope. Make-A-Wish went far beyond that. They not only gave him a telescope but scheduled the event at the observatory, which is part of HMNS.“Seeing him be able to experience what he has been asking me for is just amazing,” he said. “It is so special to be able to share a passion with him that I have had since I was a child myself. It feels as though my wish is coming true as well.
Make-A-Wish began forming in 1980 when a 7-year-old boy named Chris was fighting leukemia and wanted to be a police officer. His community in Arizona fulfilled that wish, deputizing him shortly before his death. Children 2 and a half to 18 years old across 59 Make-A-Wish chapters in the United States have their wishes granted. Additionally, international teams in places like Paris grant wishes to children there and work to facilitate wishes for American children who dream of traveling.
