Major overhaul of Knik River Bridge s set for 2025, as work to widen Glenn Highway corridor well underway

Projects include widening the corridor between the interchange and Palmer from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway, as well as a last-minute fix to address erosion in Sutton.to a section of the highway near Sutton after rapid erosion consumed nearly 100 feet of embankment near milepost 63.

Another area about to be under development — as part of a Federal Highway Administration project — is set to begin this weekend just three miles north of that emergency work in Sutton at Kings River Bridge.Tuesday that Pruhs Construction has started nightshift work and beginning this week full road closures are planned from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The department anticipates work to last a minimum of three weeks, depending on project progress.

Originally constructed in 1965, the northbound bridge over the Knik River is 25 years older than the southbound, which was built in 1990. The southbound bridge made headlines earlier this year after aoccurred in January — shutting the highway down for hours as crews worked to remove the wreckage. “There’s actually two pieces of equipment that are critical that have potentially long lead times — which is the zipper barrier machine ... the machine removes the barriers back and forth so we can alternate traffic flows,” Lamoreaux said. “And then also the paving machine required to pave the surface.”
