Sources: Several groups pursuing MLS team that would play at San Diego State's Snapdragon Stadium

“MLS is very much aware of what we’re designing, what we want to build, all the different pieces,” Wicker said then. “We’ve basically said if Measure G passes on Nov. 6, on Nov. 7 we’ll reach out to MLS and say, ‘Hey, we’re very interested in an MLS team coming to San Diego.’ ”

In 2004, Mexican businessman Jorge Vergara toured Qualcomm and met with city officials about locating his Chivas USA expansion franchise in San Diego before, against the advice of the league, choosing to share a stadium with the Los Angeles Galaxy . The seating capacity is larger than MLS-built venues, most of which are in the low to mid 20,000s, but not a deal breaker. Geodis Park, which opened this season for Nashville SC, holds 30,000.

MLS historically has wanted expansion franchises to build their own stadiums so they can control all of the revenue streams and mitigate operating losses from the soccer side that, according to some estimates, can reach $10 million per year. A San Diego team playing at Snapdragon, however, would realize instant savings by not having to fork out $300 million or more for a new stadium.
