The on-the-field excitement of baseball’s playoff season is sharing the stage unexpectedly with off-the-field challenges arising from several gender equity developments.
Unfortunately, that’s somewhat bad timing for MLB, considering the recent resignation of Kim Ng as the Marlins’ general manager . Ng is widely recognized as the first woman to serve as general manager of any major professional American sports team, as well as the first person of East Asian orientation to become the general manager of an MLB team. She is widely credited for her role in helping the Marlins achieve the 2023 playoffs after a succession of losing seasons.
Ng’s resignation is made more complex given the bizarre circumstances involving the Chicago White Sox, which had recently fired both its executive vice president and its general manager. Rather than conducting an external search for replacements, the team immediately advanced its player development head to assume a combined executive position.
Previously, Nakken became the first full-time female coach in MLB history when the Giants advanced her to the major league coaching staff in January 2020. Indeed, she became the first woman to coach on the field in a regular season major league game on April 12, 2022, when she came into game as a substitute first base coach.As of this writing, there is great anticipation for one of the most exciting World Series in recent years.
