The collision was reported between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 for Leicester. The nature of any potential injuries remains unclear at this stage.
In a tweet just before 6am on Friday , National Highways: East Midlands said: "Traffic is stopped on the M1 northbound between J20 Lutterworth and J21 Leicester due to multi vehicle collision. There are currently delays of 20 mins and approx. 1 mile of congestion." Earlier on Friday morning, traffic was stopped on the northbound carriageway between junction 25 and junction 26, near Nottingham, following a separate multi-vehicle crash. But all lanes have reopened - with delays of 20 minutes and two miles of congestion.
